Symi is not everyone's ideal Greek island, nor do we want it to be, for to us it is special and precious. There is no airport, no sandy beaches, no high rise hotels and no glamourous and glitzy nightclubs.

Instead Symi offers a harbor so picturesque that artists and photographers from around the world come to capture its charms.

Pastel houses with red tiled roofs tumble down the hillsides to the sea and each new or rebuilt house must blend with its neighbors to form the harmony that was in the past and is today Symi.

Symi is for you if:

• you love exploring traditional towns with warrens of pathways instead of traffic clogged streets

Symi is a place to stay for a while and most people rent island houses or apartments. Following are a few of our favorites.

Usual minimum stay is one week but shorter stays can be arranged based on availability.

Should your plans allow you only a few days, the Hotel Nireus, on the waterfront just around the corner of the harbor, offers comfortable rooms with splendid views to the sea.

Villa Anna is well situated being less than 20 minutes walk to the beach, easy access to bus and taxi, or you can walk down the kali strata to the Yialos area.

A traditional 17th century Symiot home in the upper town. Now converted to twentieth century standards. The accommodation is divided into 3 apartments, each with a separate entrance through a walled pebbled mosaic courtyard. Suitable for 2 - 3 people

KOSTAS APARTMENTS 1 & 2 - self catering

At the entrance to the harbor Kostas apartments are the upper part of a traditional Symiot house and are ideal for those who cannot, or do not wish to, cope with the stairs, as they are just one flight of stpes off the main harbor road. Suitable for 2 - 3 persons.

VILLA PELAGIA- self catering

3 bedroom for 3 - 5 people. On the harborside, this traditional old house is full of character, and ideal for those who don't like stairs, as it is on the harbor level. The house is large and is just a few minutes walk to the shops, cafes and excursion boats of Yialos. Taxi and bus stops for visits to Chorio and other parts of the island are nearby. As the house is situated on the harborside, you will experience the bustle and bustle of harbor life.

VILLA PETRINO

A large house, nice and airy, suitable for up to 6 people with 3 bedrooms. One has a double bed and the other two are twin-bedded rooms, The double bedroom leads outside with good views over the bay to Turkey. Pedi, a quiet and picturesque community over the hill from Symi town, sits on a lovely, pristine bay. Easily reached by foot, taxi or local bus, Pedi provides a more remote and quiet location.
